I decided to port hi-res textures for Super Mario 64 for the virtual console. Why? Dolphin is simply better than Project64. This texture pack is intended for virtual console versions of Super Mario 64.
The pack is primarily tested on NTSC-U. The PAL version should use almost the exact same textures. The JPN version however will not have any font textures. Should any textures be missing for PAL or the latest Multiplayer versions, let me know and I will try to fix it.

The NTSC-J version will not be supported by me. If you have any improvements for the NTSC-J version (especially fonts), please post them in this thread and I add them to the main pack as soon as possible.
The textures are ported from the Hypatia's, Mollymutt's and Razius's work on Super Mario 64 for Project64. The textures are not mine, and I don't have any credits for it. Credits to Hypatia, Mollymutt and Razius.
MollyMutt's used textures are the lowest quality textures in this pack and are aimed to be replaced by Hypatia's textures, as well some of Razius's textures too. Razius's textures are intended to remain.
Most notable would be the skyboxes and paintings compared from MollyMutt's (128x128 skyboxes) and Hypatia's (512x512 skyboxes) textures.
I am not changing the style and look of textures, however beside the porting quite a lot of textures require some small changes in order to fix issues such as transparency, canvas sizes or partially invisible images. Some textures might be enhanced for higher quality through.

Texture Pack status
- Current version is: V1.5.
- Both the PNG and DDS BC7 pack are uploaded and optimized through optiPNG.
- The DDS pack supports BC7.
- Both packs are packed in the 7-zip format. You might need to download 7-zip to unpack them. Newer versions of WinRAR should work too.
- Porting is done for now with 1744 textures ported and 629 alternative textures.
- Supported Super Mario 64 versions: NTSC-U, PAL & Multiplayer V1.3. NTSC-J still works, but is not supported.
Known Issues
- Super Mario 64 Multiplayer V1.3 does not correctly display the controller button icons (when reading message boards). This issue is not present in the official NTSC-U and PAL versions.
- The NTSC-J version is missing fonts. Other missing textures could be the Course logo, Main Menu, Ending and Buttons Icons.
- The French and German languages for the PAL version display the Course logo in English, still in HD. The fonts are supported through.

IMPORTANT WHEN USING THE ALTERNATIVE TEXTURES
Remove the 'Skies' folder from the root folder 'NAA' if you want to use MollyMutt's Upscaled Backgrounds. Replace the alternative 'Skies' folder in the root folder 'NAA'.
Installation Instructions
- Download the latest DDS BC7 or PNG pack. It is recommended to use the DDS pack which is much faster.
- Download the latest official development or Ishiiruka build. Dolphin 5.0 and builds prior to that will not support DDS BC7 and reduced RAM usage for DDS packs.
- DDS BC7 is supported since Dolphin 5.0-4894 and reduced RAM usage for DDS packs is supported since Dolphin 5.0-3506.
- Place the 'NAA' folder (works for every official game region) in 'C:UsersUserNameDocumentsDolphin EmulatorLoadTextures'.
- Enable 'Load Custom Textures' in Dolphin (Graphics -> Advanced -> Utility).
- Enable 'Prefetch Custom Textures' in Dolphin to load all textures at once to reduce stuttering. This option requires a fair bit amount of RAM, 8 GB should be enough.
- With the latest development build the DDS pack requires 880 additional RAM and the PNG pack 3500 MB addtional ram.
- Disable 'Crop' if having issues going fullscreen (Graphics -> Advanced -> Misc).
- Rename the 'NAA' folder to 'NTL' to make it work for the Multiplayer V1.3 version of Super Mario 64 for the virtual console.
- Get the 'Extended Draw Distance' (NTSC-U only) and 'Remove Dark Filter' codes and one Widescreen code. Enable them for optimal quality, which are listed below here.
Improvements Through Action Replay or Gecko codes
Almost every available version of Super Mario 64 for the virtual console (including the Multiplayer Edition) has his own Action Replay Codes and Gecko Codes. Check carefully for which version the codes are and if they are AR or Gecko.

This is gonna take a bit longer than expected to release (later this month or sometimes in February), i have to fix some stuff as well (repack it since the last version is missing some files, i need to retexture the blocks, fix one of 2 textures), not just convert it to the new format.Happy New Year!
First of all, feel free to use ANY file from any of my projects (SMSS, SMG, SPM) to retexture any game, except for these 3 (which means no repacking and changing w/e u don't like).

- Each texture is 8 times the original size (8 times wider and 8 times taller), which means everything will look crystal clear sharp even in 4K UHD (3840x2160) and above (this is where the stone grain will actually breathe some life into the textures).
- You can also download a smaller pack that's merely 4 times wider and 4 times taller than the original textures, case you only use 3-6x IR. I recommend us the 8x pack at resolutions of 7x IR and above.
Version 1.0 (January 1st, 2015)
- i removed the old pixls (you won't find them in the VARIATIONS folder), that were a mere reproduction of the ingame textures (with washed out colors) and replaced them with an exact replica of the ones in the promotional artwork (yes, even some of the shapes are changed to match the ones in the artwork)
- project converted to the new format
- added textures never released before
- added a more cartoonish look to some of the textures
- the blocks now resemble the original textures, i moved the stylized ones in a folder called variations

Download this 5MB archive if you wanna fix some of the following.
1. Croacus is retextured BUT files have the wrong name. I'm too lazy/busy to manually rename all 61 files. You'll find both the original and the retextured files in this archive, you just need to manually rename them.
2. Rugged Bleck: After getting his ass kicked, Bleck is all rugged with his clothes shredded and jewels in pieces. You just need to add some layers ontop of his already existing textures (dust on the clothes, cracks on his pin and monocle, etc).
3. Mister L: The only things i didint retexture are his head, his body and the composites (since they require the head and the body.. duh). The head can be done by adding the mask over Luigi's head (yeah there's a PNG with the mask as well, to make things easier - and the eyes are also done) so if you'll draw his body then you can retexture him entirely.
4. Icons for Peach and Mario's Partners from the previous PM games It would be nice if someone would retexture the Peach Icon (when selecting her) and the PM1 & PM TTYD partners (they appear when viewing the cards - i made Watt thou since he was quite easy to do).
If someone wants to contribute to (or take over) the project, i have a few requests:
- each file must be at least 8 time wider and taller and as close as possible to the original ones (you can add some grain that will give the texture some depth when played at 8x IR or above)
- textures can be stylized with abstract patterns (circles and such.. ) since they breathe some life into the game without ruining the experience
- no amateurish stuff (i don't wanna be rude and i know i haven't done the best of jobs but if someone should take over, than his textures should be at least as good as mine. and trust me there's lots of room for improvement, if you'll check Nelde's stuff you'll see his pack is like 20 times better than mine). This means no crappy upscalling for the sake of 'staying close to the original' just textures done from scratch. If you have no idea what i'm talking about, look at the Paper Mario The Thousand Door project.
